Durch einen unglücklichen Zufall wird der Hacker Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) in seine molekularen Bestandteile aufgelöst, und in einen Computer "gebeamt". In dieser von Bits und Bytes bevölkerten Cyberwelt herrscht das "Master Control Program" wie ein Diktator. Immer in Gefahr, gelöscht zu werden, trifft Flynn auf Tron (Bruce Boxleitner), ein Programm, das er selbst geschrieben hat. Mit diesem Programm gibt es eine Chance, das MCP zu besiegen, und wieder für Frieden und Ordnung im Inneren der Computer zu sorgen...
Tron ist quasi die Mutter aller Cyberspace-Filme, und stellte in den 80er Jahren eine kleine Revolution im Bereich Special-Effects dar.
