Sean Casey, Sohn eines Polizisten, hat sich mit viel Energie zum Anwalt hochgearbeitet. Auch er war Polizist, hat sich aber nach seinem Dienst dem Jurastudium verschrieben. Nach seinem Abschluß geht alles recht flott: Er wird als einer von vielen Studienabgängern als Pflichtverteidiger am New Yorker Gericht angestellt. Fast zeitgleich wird sein Vater Liam bei der Festnahme des Dealers Jordan Washington schwer verletzt, und er wird zum Ankläger des Drogenhändlers erkoren. Sean gewinnt den Fall gegen den Staranwalt Sam Vigoda, kurz darauf tritt ein weiteres Ereignis ein, das der Karriere des Junganwaltes förderlich ist: Der Bezirksstaatsanwalt bekommt während einer Wahlveranstaltung eine Harzattacke, und kann daher nicht mehr kandidieren.
