Im Jahre 1963 wird der schwarze Bürgerrechtler Medgar Evers vor den Augen seiner Frau vom KluKluxKlan-Mitglied Byron De La Beckwith erschossen. Beckwith wird im anschließenden Prozeß und in der folgenden Revisionsverhandlung freigesprochen. Nachdem Hinweise aufgetaucht sind, daß bei den damaligen Verhandlungen die Jurys beeinflußt wurden, rollt der Unterstaatsanwalt Bobby DeLaughter im Oktober 1989 den Fall wieder auf. Weitere fünf Jahre dauert es, bis Evers und dessen Witwe Myrlie endlich Gerechtigkeit widerfährt...
