Der junge Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield) wächst im US-Bundesstaat Virginia als ergebener Christ mit einem strengen Moralkodex auf. Als eines Tages sein Vater Tom (Hugo Weaving), Kriegsveteran und Trinker, im Streit seine Mutter Bertha (Rachel Griffiths) bedroht, greift Desmond zur Waffe und bringt ihn dazu, aufzuhören. Desmond schwört sich daraufhin, nie wieder eine Waffe auch nur anzurühren. Doch als sich sein Bruder Hal (Nathaniel Buzolic) nach dem Angriff der Japaner auf Pearl Harbor zum Kriegsdienst meldet, folgt ihm Desmond kurze Zeit später. Weil er aber weiterhin darauf beharrt, keine Waffe anzufassen, machen es ihm seine Vorgesetzten Captain Glover (Sam Worthington) und Sgt. Howell (Vince Vaughn), sowie seine Kameraden wie der harte Smitty (Luke Bracey) extrem schwer in der Ausbildung. An der Front gegen die Japaner wendet sich jedoch das Blatt: Während die Kugeln an ihnen vorbeischwirren und immer mehr Verluste zu vermelden sind, wächst Desmond über sich hinaus und rettet einem Verwundeten nach dem anderen das Leben - noch immer ohne eine Waffe zu tragen…
